  1. Katherine Dorsett Bennet. “Polar bears put on a show in Manitoba.” Cnn.com. 10-31-11

    Summary:
The largest wild polar bear population is in Manitoba, Canada for several weeks each autumn. They are there so the can store up fat that they lost in the summer. Even though there are many polar bears, they are an endangered species. Every year hundreds of tourists go to the arctic to see the bears in vehicles called tundra buggies. One tourist said that when you look in a polar bear’s eyes it makes you want to do every thing to save them.

    Reflection:
I agree with the tourist in the last sentence because I think that all life is worth saving. The fact that any animal, especially the polar bear, is endangered is appalling. Polar bears becoming extinct will affect kids younger than me. The kids love them because they are cuddly and the nature lovers because they are majestic. We should try to save animals that are endangered because I doubt that God wants any of His creation to become extinct.

Pete Thomas. “Lunging humpback whale nearly swallows up surfer, kayaker”. Grind TV Blog. 11/3/11
    Summary:
In California a surfer and two kayakers were almost swallowed by humpback whale that charged out of the water. This incident has been one of many. A pod of blue whales has been surface feeding on anchovies unusually close to shore. Law enforcement has been called in to keep people a safe distance from the pod.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I was interested in the blue whales. I got interested because I knew that blue whales don’t feed that close to the shore. I feel that someone should try to urge the whales out away from shore. If no one takes action soon someone could get hurt or killed. Something could also happen to one of the whales.

  3. Isaac,
I agree with your reflection because I would want to save their life. I think that there is not enough people who want to save them and not enough action to make a difference.

  4. Karla Dial. “World Population Reaches 7 Billion” CitizenLink. October 31, 2011

    Summary:

This Saturday the world reached 7 billion people. By 2100 some people are saying we could have 50 percent more people then we do now. Some people say that this will not be good because the world will get over populated. Then it could be good because that could mean more people to become Christians.

    Reflection:
I chose this article because we need to know more about what are world is coming in to. This is a big change because now we have little babies being born everyday day. We don’t think about it, but the more babies being the bigger our world becomes. This will change our world by having more or less Christians, but hopefully more. I hope we will become a bigger and better Christian environment.

OurAmazingPlanet, ‘Huge Crack Discovered In Antarctica Glacier” Fox News, November 03, 2011.
    Summary:

NASA’s Operation Ice Bridge is the largest survey done by air. The six year mission is to gather three dimensional views of ice sheets, ice shelves, and sea ice. It discovered a huge crack in the Pine Island Glacier in Antarctica.
    Reflection
This article interested me because scientists are worried about the ocean levels getting higher. A large chunk of this glacier could break off. This could cause problems. Kids in my area won’t be affected by something so far away. But we know that it may cause problems for someone else.

  6. Zach i agree with your reflection. I think we should try and take action so we can save these whales. Thanks for this article!!

  7. Genaro C. Armas. “Early snow pelts East Coast.” The Commercial Appeal. October 30, 2011.
    Summary:
An early snowstorm dropped heavy snow across the Northeast causing at least 3 deaths. A Pennsylvania man was killed when a tree fell on his house, one person died in a traffic accident, and another man was electrocuted by a downed power line. Over 2 million people lost power from this storm. Several airports had long delays. According to the National Weather Service, October snowfall is rare in some of these parts.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I love snow. I thought it would be a good way to show people that snow storms can be dangerous. No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. God created snow for us to enjoy, but sometimes too much of it causes problems. I don’t like to lose power at home because I don’t like to be cold in the winter and not be able to watch t.v.

  8. Zach,
I agree with you. It's unusual for a pod of whales to feed so close to shore. I wonder why the whale charged out of the water. If I were the surfer I would be scared to death wondering if my life was over. They should really keep an eye out for more of these incidents with whales, like you said, so no one will get hurt or killed.

"Thousands of Occupy protestors disrupt busy

    port" Yahoo News. 11-2-2011

    Summary:

Several thousand protestors gathered in Oakland

at one of the busiest ports in the nation, in

protest of the poor economy. The rally was in

support of a war veteran injured in a clash

with police. Protestors were angry with the few

job opportunites available to them. Several

major cities arranged their own protests in

support of Oakland. The main objective was to

bring attention to the lack of job opportunities

    and the need for change.

    Reflection:

I chose this article because I admire people

who stand up for their rights. This article

sparked my interest because I like to keep up

with what is going on in America. I feel well

informed due to the facts provided in the

article. I agree with the author because so many

people are affected by the lack of jobs. This

article informs kids to never let anyone put

them down and to stand up for what they believe

    in.

Dave Alsup and Phil Gast. “16-foot python devours deer in Florida.” CNN. 11/1/11.
    Summary:
A Burmese python swallowed a deer whole. The deer was 76 pounds, and the snake was 15.65 feet long. The snake was a non-native species to the area. Since it could be harmful to the wildlife so it was killed by a shot in the head.
    Reflection:
This is a very interesting article because I didn’t know a snake could swallow something as huge as a deer. It was amazing the size of the deer and the snake. I am kinda glad that the snake was killed. Though, if a snake could eat something like a deer, it could eat prey to animals and actually help the wildlife. I give this article two thumbs up.

  12. Ashton,
I agree with you completely. It is terrible that so many people have perished by a rare snow storm. I will have to take caution the next time we have a snow storm in Memphis. Overall, that was a great article.

  13. Zach,
That's really scary that some people almost got swallowed by a whale. Now I am scared of whales; I didn't know that they could be that mean! I agree with your reflection that someone should get them back to the deep sea.

Karla Dial. “Court: Kentucky Can Thank ‘Almighty God’.” CitizenLink. October31, 2011
    Summary:
On Friday, October 28, a panel of judges declared dependence on Almighty God is constitutional. After 9/11, the state lawmakers issued a finding saying that commonwealth can’t be achieved without reliance on God. Now since the state Constitution is doing this, Judge Laurance B. Vanmeter said, the state’s actions cannot be “unconstitutional.”
    Reflection:
I agree with Kentucky completely. To do anything, we have to rely on God for success. I think that at least part of America is finally starting to get things right. This country was built on faith in God, and I think that we need to stay that way. Also, they are promoting God in this state which is awesome because then there are more believers in God.

By The Associated Press. “Family: Hilary Clinton’s Mother Dies At 92.” NPR. November 1, 2011.
    Summary:

At a Washington Hospital, Dorthy Rodham died at the age of ninety two. She was the mother of Hillary Clinton who is Secretary of State. Dorthy died with her whole family next to her during the night. The Clinton family described her as a woman who was “an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.”
    Reflection:
I choose this article because I hear Hillary and Bill Clinton’s names on the news sometimes. My family has visited The Clinton Library, so I was especially interested in this article. I am sad that Dorthy has died, but she had a long time to be on this earth. It would be hard to loose someone you loved. I suggest that we pray for this family and any others who have lost loved ones.

  16. Zach,
Thats pretty scary that people almost were eaten by whales. I agree that someone should take charge and get the whales back to the deeper sea. I would be terrified if a whale was near me!

  17. Nicholas,
I agree with you that the snake should of been killed. I never new that a snake could eat s deer. I don't think that killing one snake would help the wild-life animals very much though.

I agree with you that we don't really pay much attention to how many people are being born each day and how many die. Your reflection made me stop and think about how much of a blessing it is to have so many people in our world alive and somewhat healthy.

Hartford, Conn. (AP), “1 million still powerless in storm-battered Northeast”, USA Today,
    11-2-11

    Summary
After a freak snowstorm over the weekend hitting serveral states, 1 million people are left powerless. Connecticut was hit hardest and still had half a million people were still powerless by the afternoon of November 2. People are sheltering in public places that can provide food and warmth like schools.
    Reflection
This is very strange. Having a snowstorm even before winter begins. It is very bad that so many are powerless. Lots of schools also didn’t have school. It is terrible that people had to shelter in schools because they have no comfortable home to live in.

Lauren Lee. “ Tennesseans to Vote on Abortion Law”. Fox 13 News. November 3, 2011
    Summary:
For right now, abortion cannot be banned or limited in the state of Tennessee. Next week, Tennesseans will soon vote on a constitutional amendment to prohibit abortion. The process leading up to this vote took quite a while, but in the 2014 state election the abortion vote will be taken. Many people have spoken out about this issue. For instance Sue Parker, who works with Life Choices of Memphis, thinks the state of Tennessee has one of the most liberal abortion laws in the country. Sue thinks this abortion amendment in 2014 is a great first step for the pro life community.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I disagree and agree with the amendment at the same time. I think that the only time women should have abortion done is when it could prevent death or anything that could lead to death. If the women was forced into having a child i.e., rape, then I think abortion is okay if the mother is to young to have the child. I agree with this amendment because if a women was careless and got pregnant I feel they should have to deal with the consequences of having a child. I also agree with this because to me abortion is like taking a someones life away, which is almost selfish.

  24. Dan Perry and Josef Federman. “Israel eyes strike on Iran’s nuclear sites.” Commercial Appeal. 11-3-11
    Summary:
In Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is urging a strike on Iran using nuclear weapons. Israel said that this was a test strike, but it was headed straight towards Iran. One reporter said that this could be very dangerous to us. The Atomic Energy Agency is trying to work out this problem. The nuclear missile was not the only thing that they tested, they also tested air strikes on the island of Sardinia near Italy: this is not a very good sign to countries that are enemies to Israel.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because I find it interesting that Israel has the nerve to do that when there is a treaty saying that they aren’t allowed to use nuclear weapons. It sparked my interest because Israel is where the Promised Land was and is also where Moses led his people. I agree with this author’s opinion that this isn’t a good sign because Israel is not necessarily “friends” with the United States. This can impact kids my age as they grow up if they want to be in the military they can help try to help other countries, including America, fight against these people. I think this interesting because Israel means fighting with God or struggling and in Bible class we talked about how the Israelites would have trouble with God throughout time on Earth.

Dave Alsup and Phil Gast. “16-Foot Python Devours Deer in Florida”. CNN.com. November 1, 2011.
    Summary:
On Tuesday a Burmese Python ate a 78 pound deer in the Everglades in Florida. The way they think the snakes got there is because of the hurricane in ’92. They also think that the snake might have gotten there was because someone released it. Snakes in Florida have been known to also eat alligators. Some officials say that the snake could have eaten a person probably.
    Reflection:
I chose this article because it was really crazy. It sparked my interest because I’ve never heard of anything like this. I think that the topic was presented in this article very well. I think this will affect kids who live near the Everglades because snakes are just scary. I do not think this will and ever would affect Memphis because think about what we go through every day of our lives.

  27. Hunter I agree with you. A 16 foot python eating a 3rd grader sized deer is pretty scary.
