CNN News. “Death toll from Tainted US Cantaloupe Rises to 18, with 100 Infected”. CNN News. October 4, 2011
Summary:
This article is about the potentially deadly cantaloupe grown in Colorado. Physicians have warned Americans that this particular melon is only deadly if it was grown in Rocky Ford Melons produced by Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado. The cantaloupe has a bacteria called listeria, which can cause fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, and confusion. Over 100 people have been infected by this disease and 18 have already died! This outbreak is not as bad, as the cantaloupe scare in 1989, when 21 people died from listeria! To find more about this deadly fruit, search CNN News to get the inside scoop.
Refllection:
I chose this article because I personally enjoy cantaloupe and I wanted to know what was good to eat and what wasn’t. Even though doctors say to only eat cantaloupe not grown in Colorado I still refuse to eat any. Another reason I chose this piece is my grandparents, eat a ton of cantaloupe to stay healthy, and I want them to know about this outbreak so they can stay safe too. By choosing this article I hope to inform not only my classmates buy my teachers too! I hope you find my short overview helpful!

Josh Levs. “Nobel winner dies days before award announced.” CNN. 10/3/11.
Summary:
The Nobel Prize or medicine winner died before the award was announced. His name was Ralph Steinman and he died at the age of sixty-eight from pancreatic cancer. The Nobel committee tried to call him. They were completely unaware of his death. Ralph will be dearly missed.
Reflection:
I think this is just awful. I honestly think the Nobel committee should have been notified of his death before the award was announced. This is very rare for a winner to die before the award was announced. Right now, Ralph is probably looking down from heaven and being glad that he won the award even though he is dead. It’s the award that counts, not the prize money. He will be missed by his family and close friends.
Stephen Hawkins. "Cowboys Collapse, Fall to Unbeaten Lions." 10/3/11
ReplyDeleteSummary:
Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys went up 24-0 in their game against the Detroit Lions. At the end of the second half, with two and a half minutes left, they were up 27-3.Once the second half started the Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo threw two interceptions out of three passes. They were both returned for touchdowns, and then he threw another pick which setup the Lions scoring drive to win the game 34-30.
Reflection:
I chose this article because it is a great example of never giving up. The Cowboys were up by so much, and the Lions came back to win. This is an article that can make an impact on kids' lives because some kids quit easily, but when they read this article it may make them rethink next time they quit. I feel sad about this article because the Cowboys weren't doing good and the Lions weren't supposed to be the best team in the league, it would have been a great win for the Cowboys. This article sparked my interest because the Cowboys aren't the best team and the Lions were supposed to be the best team in the NFL.

ReplyDeleteAnthony Greene, Brianna Starks, Alex Sweazey. “Divorce Gives Birth To New Families” Y-Press. September 13,2011.
ReplyDeleteSummary:
One of the things most kids deal with is divorce. Some kids like having divorced parents cause it means two Christmas’s and two birthdays. For other kids it is a struggle to even go to school and to do their best when divorce is on their mind. When your parents are divorced it might be harder as you get older because you have to pick who you want to live with. Some kids deal with divorce better than others and some just have to get use to it.
Reflection:
I choose this topic because a lot of my friend’s are going through theirparents divorce. I always try to comfort my friends but sometimes it’s hard when you don’t know what to say. This topic makes me kind of sad to know that there are kids in the world who don’t have parents that get along. I know that this is a part of God’s plan but sometimes it’s hard to believe that this could happen. This could affect kids my age about the way the act, treat others, or choose to live their life’s.

Associated Press. “Chemical Mixing Sparks Massive Texas Plant Fire.” NPR. October 3, 2011.
Summary:
In Dallas Texas, a fire started as workers were mixing chemicals at a plant. The fire was at the Maganbled Inc. facility in Waxahachie, Texas. No injuries were caused because of the fire. About 1,000 people who had to leave their homes, were allowed to return to their homes on Monday evening. The spokesman for Maganbled, Donald Golden said that 25-30 employees where on the grounds of the plant when the explosion happened. Jessenia Colin who is an assistant manager at a hotel nearby said “It smells like a whole bunch of chemicals, like wrappers burning. It’s making every one's heads hurt.” Stephanie Otto said that she was working in her new restaurant, which is located about a quarter-mile from the plant, when she heard sirens. When she went outside she saw a “huge plume.” Stephanie says “It was huge. It looked like an atomic bomb went off.” The fire led to a search for documents that belonged to the company. The fire did not cause many severe problems for Maganbled Inc.
Reflection:
I chose this article because there have been forest fires in Texas. I was surprised that this fire was not caused by the drought in Texas. Instead, it was caused by chemicals. I am grateful that nobody was harmed during the explosion. This incident must have been very extreme, because the residents had to leave their homes. I am surprised that the chemical mix could cause such a big impact on the community.
I know lot's of people who have divorced parents. I don't want to make them sad, so I don't usually talk about it. I think it would be a great idea to pray for people who are having a hard time with their parent's divorce. Thanks Madison for helping us notice this!
ReplyDeleteHudon... I agree with your article that we should never give up. I was sad to when I saw the cowboys loose at the last second hope we do better next time!!
ReplyDeleteI think that Blair's article is interesting. I like cantaloup so I should probably watch which kind i am eating! I don't usually eat this fruit, but this is a great way to make people aware of what they are eating! Thank you Blair for showing this to us. We should always watch what we are eating!

“New Iphone Risks Same Old Same Old” By Geoffrey A. Fowler. The Wall Street Journal.10/3/11.
Summary:
Apple has sold more than 128 million Iphones since 2007. Now they face the challenge of how to amaze costumers in a now huge smartphone market. They have been working on a new Iphone 4 that is thinner, lighter and has many new features like an eight megapixel camera. They now have the question of will customers fall in love with the new features? People have switched to apple because of the amazing software that other companies didn’t have. Apple now faces competition from Google and Android in the smartphone market. According to recent surveys, Android accounts for 43% of today’s smartphone systems, while Apple accounts for 28%. Apple is still the largest smartphone producer.
Reflection:
I picked this article because I enjoy learning hearing about Apple and its success. Apples products have changed the world. It’s amazing to think about how a college dropout has left such a mark upon the entire world. I think kids my age will be amazed by the brilliance behind Apple. Apple is truly an astonishing company that just keeps getting better and better.

W.J. Hennigan “Military Adopting Smart Devices for Battlefield” ,Los Angeles Times , 10-2-11
Summary The U.S. Military is now using electronic devices on the battlefield. Apple devices such as
iPads and iPhones are being used to locate U.S. troops that are under attack. One device such as an I
pad in an airplane takes the place of many maps and also enables the pilot to magnify an area. The
devices are being used in all branches of the military.
Reflection I chose this article because I am interested in technology. It is amazing how the military has
adapted something that is used for other things such as playing games. I chose this article before the
death of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Now the devices will reflect his great works. Many people
consider him to be a modern day Albert Einstein , or have compared him to Walt Disney.
I like Zach's post because my brother loves computer. All of my family has an I-phone and I-pod. We all have Apple Computers. We always get the most recent products. Whenever we get a new phone or computer we get to appreciate the technology that allows us to do all of the things we do!
ReplyDeletemadison,
ReplyDeletei think your article is intresting. even though my parents have never been divorced, i know it would be terrible if htey were.
CNN Wire Staff. “Deaths from tainted cantaloupes rise to 15.” CNN.com. September 30, 2011.
ReplyDeleteSummary:
Fifteen people have died now from listeria monocytogenes bacteria. They got this from eating Rocky Ford cantaloupes. Before it was only 13 people dead and there were only 74 illnesses but now are 84, if not more illnesses and 15 deaths. One third of the deaths have been in New Mexico. The health investigators have traced the bacteria to Jenson Farms in Colorado and they have recalled all their cantaloupes. They also have warned consumers to not eat these specific cantaloupe and cantaloupes they do not know were they came from.
Reflection:
This story worries me because this bacteria could come to Memphis if some one eats a contaminated cantaloupe. Like the health department I warn against eating cantaloupe. This could impact kids my age because they could have lost a loved one to this disease. This article sparked my interest because my mom has been talking about it for about a week. I also choose this article because someone tried to give my baby sister cantaloupe and it worried me.
Issac, I agree that we should be cautious about the cantaloup. I know that lots of people will not want to stop eating this fruit, including me! But agree with you that we should be very cautious of this fruit. I would hate for my friends and family to become sick.
ReplyDeleteHudson, this article is interesting because every one thinks the Cowboys are the underdogs just like the Lions. I also like how you put in that some kids give up after their first try. This will help kids rethink about giving up afteer the first try. Even though the Lions were down by a lot the came back and won and the Cowboys just kept trying.

Jimmy Traina. “Charlie Manuel Vs. Squirrel”. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com. Thursday October 6, 2011 10:51 AM
Summary:
David Freese was the hero for the Cardinals on Wednesday. Another highlight was Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino adventuring in the outfield. The real show stealer was a squirrel, who had run around home plate and then into the stands. This definitely displeased Phillies starter Roy Oswalt. Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said after the game, “Of course, being from the South and being a squirrel hunter, if I had a gun there, might have done something. I’m a pretty good shot.”
Reflection:
I chose this article because I found it amusing and interesting. I enjoyed when Charlie Manuel was stating that if he had a gun, he would have done something to the squirrel. I think that others would like it because it is sort of humorous, and odd that a single creature would such a thing. It doesn’t impact kids my age much, even though it does have to do with our Memphis Cardinals. Imagine if you were one of the people in the stands who had the squirrel scampering into their laps. I bet that was a complete surprise!
Zach, I comepletely agree Apple products have change the world, and keep progressing! Apple's success is extremely exciting to watch. Now that brings us our everyday items such as iphones, ipads, and macs.

Brian Mahoney. NBA negotiations break with very
huge day ahead. Yahoo! News. October 4,2011
Summary: The NBA lockout has lasted over three
months. Regular season games may be cancelled
if there is not an agreement soon. Derek Fisher,
the president of the Players Association, said
October 4 was an important day for
negotiations. Adam Silver, the deputy
commisioner, said there has to be quick progess
the next three days. Fisher also said that both
sides were aware of the calendar. If there is
no progress, regular-season games may be missed.
There will be long negotiations ahead.
Reflection: I chose this article because
basketball is an important sport in America.
I agree with the author on this article. There
is excitement about these negotiations. This
article sparked my interest because I like
basketball. If there is not a season, the
popularity of basketball will decrease.
Madison:
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your reflection. My parents have never been divorced, so I have no clue how bad it must feel.

Discovery News. “Crocodile Turns Bright Orange.” Fox News. September 6, 2011.
Summary:
Snappy, a crocodile in Australia, is setting a new trend with his bright orange skin. This is the result of him attacking the water filter at Roaming Reptiles animal park in Australia. An expert on crocodile said that it was probably something I the water such as iron, tannins from leaves, or red algae. The owner of the animal park said that he attacked it one day because “he is pretty territorial”, and his new color was noticed a few weeks after that. Snappy is perfectly healthy despite his vivid hue; and eventually he will return to his normal hue.
Reflection:
I picked out this article because I like to read about abnormal things that don’t usually happen. I like it when God plays around with things and doesn’t stick to the status quo. This is especially funny to me because crocodiles aren’t supposed to be orange at all! They’re supposed to be green! The sad thing about this is that eventually, Snappy will most likely become green again. I personally think that God should let the crocodile stay orange forever, but it’s his choice. It was a fun color while it lasted!
Nicolas:
ReplyDeleteI have no clue if this has ever happened before, but it's strange. The Nobel committee should have been notified about this before the ceremony! That must have been very embarrassing on their part. Shame on them!
Hudson,I like your article because it tells
ReplyDeletenever to give up. Despite being down such a huge
margin, the Lions fought back and won.
Zach,I think that your article is amazing! Who would've thought a college dropout would end up selling 128 million smartphones. I think that some customers will be very happy with this new phone, but others might be a little disappointed with this new Iphone.

Associated Press. “Protestors take on Wall Street.” The Commercial Appeal. October 3, 2011.
Summary:
It has been a month now since there has been a group called the Occupy Wall Demonstration in NY. They started out a small group of college students, but every day it grows bigger and bigger. The protestors believe that the economic problems we have today in our country. There have been 700+ arrests there. Some of the people have been staying in a private plaza called Zuccotti Park.
Reflection:
I chose this article because they talk about Wall Street all of the time on the news. It sparked my interest because this doesn’t happen on your daily basis. I think that it could have had a little more detail on it, but I’m not saying it’s not a bad review it could just have more info. I don’t think it will affect the kids in my community. I do think though that it will the kids in NY be affected by being scared because there might be someone sleeping right outside of your apartment.
Rachel, I like your because that is like a once in a lifetime type thing, so I liked it a lot and I like reptiles!
ReplyDeleteRachel, it is very interesting that a crocodile would turn orange. It sounds like a rare event. I'm going to look up that article tonight.
ReplyDeleteLawrence Buser. "Small World: Clerk recognizes bank robber while shopping." The Commercial Appeal. Oct. 6, 2011.
ReplyDeleteSummary:
Last week, a teller from First South Financial Credit Union was robbed by Frank Buckley III. Buckley came in and slid a note to the teller saying that if he doesn't get any money he has a gun and will shoot. After the robbery, the teller went shopping with her husband at Walmart when she saw Buckley again. The tellers husband watched Buckley leave then copied down his license tag for authorities. Buckley later got arrested and is now in federal custody without bond.
Reflection:
I chose this article because I think it's really funny how a teller and a robber would see each other again, and in Walmart. This article really shows how the world is actually small for people to see random people one day and then the next day they see each other again. I truly think that this was all God's doing and that He meant for her to get robbed. I'm glad that the teller didn't get hurt during the scene because this would be an even bigger mess if she had died and she probably has a family to take care of. I hope nothing like this happens again, but if it does I hope that the robber will get caught every time.
Wow Madison I totally agree with you on your divorce article. For me it would be really hard to get through life and I wouldn't want to have two Christmases. I would want to have one with my whole family together. I would be a wreck if my parents divorced. You did a great job on your reflection. I agree with you because a lot of my friends parents are going through divorce too.
ReplyDeleteWow! Hunter, That is a large number of arrests made. NYPD officers are being paid 2 million more dollars for working overtime. Hopefully these protests clear up soon.
ReplyDeleteAshton,
ReplyDeleteI like yours because you seemed to really understand the article and took what it said in your own words. Great Job!
