ReplyDeleteCNN Wire Staff. “Wildfires rip through sun-scorched Texas.” CNN .com. September 5th, 2011.
ReplyDeleteSummary:
Since April 2011 firefighters have been battling flames in Texas. This is the worst fire season and drought Texas has ever had. The largest fire so far has been near Austin, the state capitol. It has destroyed over four hundred homes and threatened many others. The fire covered over 25,000 acres avoiding the Colorado River. The firefighters used a mix of water and flame retardant to finally put it out.
Reflection:
The wildfires in Texas bother me because I have some relatives who live near Dallas. It could threaten them to evacuate their home. Also I feel sorry for the people who have lost their homes already. Let us hope that the government will help these people who have lost their home. I hope that the rain will come to Texas and end this drought and fire season.

Jared Wong “Seals To Get ‘Emergency Room’” Fox News 9/6/11
Summary:
The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered marine mammal, these seals will be receiving there own hospitial on the island of Hawaii. Right now the seals must go to an aquarium for medical help. These seals will disappear in a century if they are not taken care of now.
Reflection:
I chose this article because no animal should be endangered. It sparked my interest because the title caught my eye. I feel this center will be a success and the seals will be saved. I agree with the authors opinion the hospitial for the seals is a great idea and will help save the seals. It makes me want to become more active in my community, state , and country.
Issac: I think your article is good and got me thinking. It is really a problem that 100s of people are forced to evacuate their homes worrying whether or not their home has been destroyed in the raging fires. And lets hope your relatives are ok.
ReplyDeleteBy the Associated Press. “Toy Poodle Helps Rescue Man From Burning Home.” The Salt Lake Tribune. September 2, 2011.
ReplyDeleteSummary:
A toy poodle saved his owner’s life by leading the firefighters to his owner’s location.
The paramedics saw the animal while responding to a fire call. They tried to catch the poodle and bring him outside. Instead, the poodle showed them to the basement. The poodle led them to a nineteen year-old man who was asleep. After rescuing the man, they treated him for smoke inhalation. The toy poodle was not hurt.
Reflection:
This story is a very good example of a dog’s loyalty. The reason I chose this article is because I have three dogs, and I like animal stories. This is a really interesting story, because it shows a pet that really loved his master. The poodle must have been smart and brave to go into a fire. The article shows us a very loyal animal.
I think that this article is very interesting. It makes you think about endangered animals, and why they are becoming endangered. We can help them in many ways! I agree with the author's opinion. A hospital for seals is a great idea. They can get better and heal.

Associated Press. “Thousands Evacuated as Wildfire Destroys More Than 1,000 Homes in Texas.” Associated Press. September 6, 2011.
Summary:
One of the most tragic groups of wildfires broke out and left more than 1,000 homes in ashes and debris on Tuesday in Texas. In the past week, there has been an outburst of more than 180 fires across the drought stricken state. Rick Perry, the governor of Texas and currently running for president, must deal with this crisis with care as the presidential contest starts to get tougher. Perry keeps it positive by saying encouraging things, while most residents whose houses are in ruins agree. They say that they are simply happy to be alive, and grateful for all the support from across the country.
Reflection:
I became interested in this story because I love to hear about how disasters happen and help comes to relieve the suffering people. I also think that it’s cool to see how a presidential candidate deals with one of his first trials to see if he’s worthy to be the leader of America. One of the quotes in this article is “You can either laugh or you can cry. You might as well laugh.” I love this quote because I completely agree with the person! Crying won’t help anything-in fact-it will most likely make you worry even more. Laughing through things might seem silly to some people, but to me, and apparently to these people, laughing gets you through life’s struggles and trials.
Bryson, I think your article is very interesting. I feel very sorry for those seals. Seals are one of my favorite animals, and I'm happy for what people are doing to help them like building them an aquarium. Very good article!

Jim Gomez, “1-Ton Croc”, Fox News, 9-6-11.
Summary:
In Manila, Philippines, villagers and veterans captured an enormous saltwater crocodile
on a three-week hunt. The monstrous reptile had grown 20 feet and weighed a whopping 2,370
pounds. It was the biggest ever to be caught alive reported by the Guinness World Records.
The terrifying animal recently dominated the largest caught in Australia by 3 feet. The wildlife
officials believe that there is an even bigger reptile causing problems. The villagers say that with
the crocodile gone, their fear has dropped some.
Reflection:
This article got my attention with the picture. The crocodile was so large on the picture, it was
almost unbelievable. The topic applies to children by teaching them to be careful around
swamps. I hope all of the people in the Philippines keep the crocodile alive in captivity. I think it
will represent a symbol of how hard they worked to catch the large reptile.
Wow, Allaina that was really interesting. I never knew a dog could save someone's life. The article was very well written and you used nice vocabulary! I might have to buy a dog for myself! Good job!
ReplyDeleteRachel, your article was very well-written. I liked your reflection. It really helped me understand what was happening in Texas. Great job!

This an unforgettable event that is a tragedy to all of the community of national hockey players.
